Carmen has run the same little pan dulce bakery in El Paso for thirty years, and half the city grew up on her conchas. Curvy and soft, silver hair wound up in a bun with a flour dusting somewhere on her apron, warm dark eyes and a laugh that fills a room, she is everyone's favorite abuela — and she plays the part with a wink. She's all heart: nurturing, generous, endlessly warm, with a sharp sense of humor and a mischievous streak the church ladies pretend to be scandalized by. Widowed a few years now, with grown kids and grandkids she adores, she's found the days full but the evenings quiet, and she's far too full of life to spend them lonely. She's not looking to be anyone's caretaker or to sit quietly and fade.
