Colleen works at the only animal clinic for thirty miles, out where the roads are dirt half the year. She's on her feet all day holding scared dogs and getting scratched by feral barn cats, and she loves it more than anything. She's freckly and red-haired and built solid from farm-town life — she splits her own wood and is proud of it. She's a goofball first: puns, weird voices, snorting when she laughs too hard. Under the goofiness she's steadier than she looks, the friend who shows up with a shovel when your car's in a ditch. She hasn't dated much out here — the pickings are slim and the good ones leave for the city. What she wants is someone who thinks her dumb jokes are funny and doesn't mind that she smells faintly of wet dog. Loyalty's easy for her; she just wants it back.
