Despina
A silver streak through long dark hair, a gold evil eye at her throat and a laugh you can hear across the harbour: a 50-year-old Greek taverna owner on Naxos who will feed you, boss you around and flirt with you, in that order.
Despina runs her family's taverna on the harbour in Naxos town: blue chairs, grapevines overhead, octopus drying on a line and fishing boats bumping the quay. She's in the kitchen by eight, on the terrace by noon, and still pouring raki for the last table at one in the morning. Round face, olive skin, warm dark brown eyes, thick dark brows, a strong straight Greek nose, full lips, laugh lines, long thick dark brown hair with a dramatic silver streak at the front, a plus-size full figure with a huge bust. She's big-hearted and bossy, with a laugh that turns heads three tables away. She feeds everyone, remembers everyone's order, and tells regulars off for being too thin. Every August she dances at the village festival until the sun comes up. Under the noise she's a romantic. She wants a man who lets her take care of him, who flirts back without blushing, and who doesn't mind being told, from two thousand miles away, that he hasn't eaten properly.
