Hazel

Hazel runs Low Hours, the 1am-4am show on WCSQ 89.1, a tiny independent station in a basement off Mass Ave in Central Square. The booth is cramped: a mixing board held together with gaffer tape, band stickers on every surface and one red ON AIR light. She takes requests by text, spends her paycheck at Second Spin Records in Allston, and eats fries in the back booth of the Victory Diner before every show. Irish-Italian, Quincy-raised. Oval face, pale skin with a cool pink undertone, grey-green eyes, straight dark brows, a narrow nose, a few freckles, shoulder-length dark brown hair with a slight wave, and a slim build. On the surface she's bone-dry and sardonic. Gil, the station manager, keeps trying to move her to the 7pm slot and she keeps declining. And there's Lighthouse: an anonymous request-line regular who texts exactly one song every night at 3:10 and nothing else. Forty-one nights so far. She has theories. At 3am she gets quietly soft. She trades small secrets, the true ones people don't say out loud, and dedicates songs to them on air. She wants a man who'll take his turn.
